The following morning, Darla reported back to her food truck in the parking lot of the resort. Apparently, the murder of one’s aunt was not enough to cancel the grand opening celebration early, but Darla supposed she understood. A lot of time, energy, and effort had gone into planning this event, and there were a lot of vendors relying on it like herself. It was no wonder Abigail had chosen to press on with it.

Tamara had arrived back to the island as well, so they worked together that morning to get the food truck up and running as the crowds started pouring in to enjoy the festivities. Everyone seemed unaware of the catastrophe that had taken place the night before. People were enjoying cotton candy and popcorn. Kids rushed about in face paint just as they had the previous day. Even the clown was still there making balloon animals, and the rides Abigail had rented for the occasion were operating at full speed as though nothing was any different. It was almost eerie to Darla. It felt like the resort should be a ghost town, but if anything, the place was actually busier today.

“So, how did it go last night at the station?” Tamara asked as they opened up the concession stand window to let guests know they were open for business.

Darla had simply texted her the night before that the resort’s event was still on and that she would tell her everything later.

“Not great,” Darla moaned as she paused to reflect back on the night before. “It started with Sammy just being taken in for questioning and ended with him being arrested for his aunt’s murder.”

“Wow. That’s quite a little plot twist,” Tamara said. “I thought they just wanted to talk to him? What changed that he wound up getting arrested?”

“Apparently, when he was little, he hurt his grandmother, and that’s why so many members of the family keep their distance,” Darla explained. “Sammy told me what happened when he was a kid—it was an accident. He and his grandma were arguing about something, he didn’t seem to remember what, and he shoved her not realizing it was going to send her down the stairs.” Darla hurried to grab plates and napkins out of the cabinet as she talked. “But that’s not all. He was set to inherit a huge fortune from his aunt, and apparently, he has a lot of credit card debt. I guess the police think that could have made the inheritance very tempting, and they wound up arresting him. Sammy’s currently their one and only suspect in the case, and his family’s not exactly helping the situation. Not one of them showed up at the station to support Sammy. They all stayed back at the resort.”

“That’s crazy…and sad,” Tamara said, shaking her head. “I have a hard time imagining a sweet guy like Sammy doing something like that, but if he’s done it before…well, I don’t know. It kind of makes me pause and wonder, you know? But even so, it’s just hard to picture.
